Background
Mal’s family were refugees from Ala Mhigo during the Garlean invasion, her father did well as a business assistant, and they were able to live in Ul’dah proper. Growing up both of her parents talked incessantly about returning to Ul’dah one day and rebuilding their old home. Mal however grew up completely unaware of the country and had no such notions of going “home”. She wanted to travel, to see everything and have adventure. As a teen she would go see adventurers talking at the guild, learn about what they did, listen to their stories. She was fascinated by the life it involved, not long after reaching adulthood she was practicing using a spear outside the city in an attempt to train. She heard a commotion and ran just in time to see a green skinned Au’ra woman punching and kicking a handful of gang thugs who she recognized as being part of the biggest gang in Ul’dah. This woman was spinning and flipping through the air and wrecking these hardened thugs. Mal saw these moves and knew immediately that was what she really wanted to train in. Selling the barely used spear she purchased a set of knuckles and immediately applied to the pugilist’s guild.
Over the next couple of years Mal saw this woman coming in and out of the adventurer’s guild, she was a very well known hero around Eorzea at this point and her name was Marla. Marla seemed to know many unique styles of fighting and magic, and Mal couldn’t help but idolize the woman. One day Mal caught sight of Marla as she entered the adventurer’s guild, Mal decided to follow her and ended up getting noticed and was able to spend time with her Idol. The two hung out multiple times over the next few weeks, and Mal developed a crush on Marla. Eventually Mal wanted to hunt something she was worried was out of her league and asked Marla to come along and watch her back. The hunt took a few days and the two spent a bunch of time together, and it culminated in Mal being so excited about the kill that she got excited and kissed Marla. Mal was so embarrassed she ran away, and Marla had to chase her down to tell her that her feelings were reciprocated. Mal soon after joined the family and moved in to the Clan home along with the others who were already living there.
Personality
Mal is one of the more energetic members of the Clan, she is very active, evidenced in her profession as an adventurer. She enjoys exploring new places, both indoors and outdoors and is jealous of all the unique places Marla has visited. She has practically worships Marla as her idol and role model of what she wants to be and how she wants to live. Mal is motivated by new experiences especially seeing new unique places, people, creatures, or objects. Around the house she will take care of odd jobs for the others, and is rarely seen idle. She tends to her clothes around practicality over style, and is more interested in people’s behavior than their looks.
Mal enjoys people watching, and can be a bit of a voyeur, her interests are often fed by watching someone else do the thing she’s interested in, such as watching Marla adventure before she was confident enough to do it on her own. She is easily embarrassed and this leads to her being the target of a lot of good-natured teasing around the home.
